The Electoral Commission (EC) has disclosed that all eligible prisoners will be registered during the fourth and final phase of the Biometric Voters Registration.
Although a Supreme Court has ruled that prisoners are eligible to vote, registering those qualified to vote has been a problem for the Electoral Commission and the Prisons Service because they do not have the necessary requirements such as a Voter’s ID, National Health Insurance cards, Driver’s License or Passport.
Another problem is that the names the inmates are using on documents available to the Prisons Service are mostly nicknames and not their real names but the EC says it is finding a way to deal with the issues.
According to Director of Public Relations at the EC, Christian Owusu Parry, his outfit in collaborating with the Prisons Service has set up a working committee to thrash out the problems of identifying qualified prisoners with valid identification for the exercise.
He told Adom News that the Committee, comprising officials of both the Prisons Service and the EC, is working feverishly to come up with the best possible ways of identifying Ghanaians among the prisoners.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Prisons Service, ASP Courage Atsem says until the EC relaxes the registration rules their joy of being allowed to vote will be short-lived.
“We are giving the inmates time to get in touch with their family members to bring them their national ID they have at home to use for the registration. If they are able to bring them in good time and they represent their true identity, they will be able to join the ongoing biometric registration exercise,” he said.
