Cocoa experts from across the continent are meeting in Accra to deliberate improved cocoa production measures.The meeting is at the instance of the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) and the African Cocoa Initiative (ACI).The WCF/ACI, which was launched in March this year, is seeking to invest in programmes that would promote and sustain cocoa production.Soni Ebai, Acting Chief of Party of ACI said the two institutions are particularly interested in strategies to improve productivity through better planting materials.The organizations also intend offering a 50-hectre new seed garden to support replanting rate of 70,000 hector per year by the fifth year in Ghana.Mr. Ebai also announced support for the Africa Cocoa Breeders Working Group to promote technology transfer through the adoption and expansion of recently developed curricular, replicate and expand farmer business service centres and develop input distributors close to farmers in the regions.The Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Tony Fofie said the board plans to double cocoa production to a 150 percent level.Projects of WCF/ACI are being funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), WCF and the Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH).
