The country’s first-ever warehouse complex for cocoa storage is expected to be ready for use before the end of this crop season. This is a 100 thousand tonnes facility in Takoradi. The total capacity of warehouses in the country is about 400 thousand tonnes. COCOBOD rents most of these apart from the 50 thousand tonnes facility in Tema. Public Affairs Manager, Noah Amenyah however says this situation should be improved with the completion of the new warehouse complex. "Because it s a complex it has more than just a warehouse. They are left with some finishing to be done on the road and other sections of the facility" he said. "We would have inspect what the contractor has done because we want to ensure he has done everything including automating some of the activities there, the transit quarters and other facilities that are supposed to be provided in the complex” he added. Apart from the complex, he added that there are also plans to build more warehouses in both Tema and Takoradi as part of long term measures to tackle inadequate warehousing facilities for cocoa. Meanwhile, COCOBOD is today launching the National Cocoa Rehabilitation Programme which seeks to help increase and sustain cocoa production in Ghana, through replanting of old and diseased cocoa trees. It will also involve the free supply of 20 million seedlings to farmers this year.
