Corruption Watch Ghana is asking the government to investigate and prosecute persons found culpable in the recent Auditor General’s report which revealed widespread acts of financial impropriety.
A letter signed by the Project Manager of Corruption Watch Dr Kojo Asante wants the Attorney General, Parliament’s Accounts Committee and other related state agencies to act fast on the findings in order to save the public purse.
A decision by the Auditor General to vet an amount of 10 billion cedis being demanded from the state by individuals and companies for services rendered in 2016 showed widespread financial impropriety.
After a thorough audit of the claims, Mr Daniel Domelevo had to disallow a whopping 5.4 billion cedis for various breaches including the absence of relevant documents, goods not supplied, claims already paid for, among others.
But for the intervention of Mr Domelevo, the monies would have ended up in private pockets.
Corruption Watch, an anti-graft initiative by the Centre for Democratic Initiative, Joy FM together with other institutions wants a quick investigation and possible prosecution of all offenders.
The letter regrets that despite the reports of the fraudulent dissipation of public funds in the past, nothing appears to have been done to the offenders.
The initiative believes the prosecution of the offenders will act as a deterrent to others who may want to engage in such fraudulent acts in the future.
