The much talked about upgrade of the Tamale Airport to an international status is to begin this year at an estimated cost of 174 million dollars.
The upgrade is expected to among other things see an extension of the current 2 thousand meters runway to 4 thousand. Another notable development will be an airport city of hotels, shopping malls and executive offices.
Speaking at the Inaugural Power Breakfast Meeting of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Ghana, Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company, Doreen Fianko noted the project should be completed within four years.
“We will first start with the expansion and strengthening of the runway so that it can handle the largest aircraft you can imagine. We will continue to use the existing facilities; there are a few which we can put up” she said.
The runway will take about a year to complete but it will still be operational because some portions can be used now. The terminal building could however take about two years.Given a maximum of four years, all things being equal, we should see a full blown international airport in the next four years” she added.
