Telecoms Analysts have for sometime now predicted a shift from patronage of voice services to data services in the telecommunication sector.
There is however a growing debate about the best data pricing module. The operators have always adopted the volume-based charges until one of them recently introduced the time-based pricing module- the first-ever on the market.
But which one is the most efficient but less costly for consumers. Technology Analyst, Mawuli Tse spoke to JOY BUSINESS.
“It depends on an individuals’ internet usage. A time-based pricing module, allows you to stay on as long as you want but after just one day, one week or one month and then your service is exhausted. And if you travel for a week, you pay for no service at all. Those are the advantages and disadvantages of time-based” he noted.
“If its volume-based module, then you need to use it up to the volume you have then your service cuts off. If you don’t use it at all your volume allocation is still there for you so you can back after a week and roll over to succeeding periods” he continued.
I will say that for very heavy users it’s probably better to have time-based because you use it as much as you want and go away. For lighter users it might be better to have volume-based because you can use it for ten minutes, maybe 2 megabits then come back and use 5 megabits for another 5 minutes. It will last you longer if you are a light user” he concluded.
