Vice President John Dramani Mahama announced on Thursday, a portion of the $3billion Chinese loan will be used to establish the Accra Intelligence Traffic Management System to control perennial traffic congestion in the city.
According to the Vice President, a control tower would be built to help monitor and regulate traffic lights.
Vice President John Dramani Mahama said traffic congestion in various parts of the country is unacceptable and hopes the traffic management system will be useful.
Vice President Mahama was commissioning one hundred new buses for the Metro Mass Transit Company in Accra on Thursday.
The buses valued at $11million were funded from internally generated funds by Metro Mass Transit Company Limited.
Addressing the gathering, the acting Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit, Maxwell Awuku said 360 routes have been opened nation-wide for the Metro Mass Transit.
Metro Mass currently has a total bus fleet of 1,186 with 667 in operation, covering 155 districts with 16 depots and a hub.
The company has provided direct employment for over 4,090 people and indirect employment to over 2,500 people.
Deputy Minister for Transport, Dzifa Attivor, assured government will continue to offer support to transport companies across the country to make transportation easy for the populace.
