Telecoms Market Share Statistics published by the National Communication Authority for the first quarter, ending March 2012 indicated Expresso Ghana has finally reversed more than two years of largely declining subscriber base by increasing it subscribers from 183,607 to 202,314 between January and March. The company witnessed consistent decline in subscribers throughout 2011, except between April and May, when it saw an increase from 228,178 to 239,815. Records published by the NCA indicated that Expresso (Kasapa) recorded what is probably its highest subscriber base of 394,051 in January 2009, then begun a zigzag kind of growth from that moment on. By the close of 2009 (December) its subscriber base had fallen to 262,290; and it continued the decline monthly for the first half of 2010, and then switched back to a zigzag growth for the rest of that year. But Expresso (Kasapa) had seen a checked growth since the 1990s; between 1997and 1998, its subscribers increased from 2,575 to 2,810, but fell to 2,212 in 1999. From then on it fell drastically to 971 in 2000 and to 928 in 2001, before rising sharply to 8,668 the following year, and by 2006 it had reached over 200,000. The increase in the first quarter of 2012 was only enough to lift its market share marginally from 0.8% to 0.9% of the total mobile subscriptions of 21,660,021, which represents a penetration of 87.7%. The company recently attributed the reverse in the consistent decline to promotions such as the Independence Day Free Calls, and the free three months Expresso to Expresso calls for all new customers. The company has also resumed the distribution of it relatively high speed CLIQ Modem. Some staff of the company said to this writer the new Managing Director, Al-Amir Ahmed Al-Amir Yousif had shown signs of restoring the fortunes of the company, and the reverse of the decline within just months of his taking over, was evidence of better days to come. Meanwhile, contrary to Expresso’s turn around, third place Tigo continued its consistent decline since October 2011, finishing the quarter with 3,642,229 representing 16.9% market share, more than 1.5 percentage point decline from 18.53% market share at the close of 2011. Vodafone also continued its consistent growth to consolidate its second position with a subscriber base of 4,524,038 representing 20.9% market share, a marginal increased from 20.2% market share at the close of 2011. But Airtel made a stronger showing finishing the quarter with 2,897,077 representing 13.4%, which is about 0.6% percentage point higher than its 2011 full year market share of about 12.8%. Market leader MTN also finished the quarter with 10,394,393, representing 47.9% market share.
