Former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Bantamweight champion Alfred ‘Cobra’ Kotey has exclusively told Joy Sports that he will step back into the boxing ring only if his family gives him the go ahead.
Kotey was speaking on the Joy Sports Link, Saturday afternoon.
Kotey’s wish to continue his boxing career at the age of 43 is mainly for financial reasons.
“I will speak to my family members before taking a decision. If they give me the go ahead, I will continue fighting.”
Callers into the programme expressed admiration for one of Ghana’s greatest ever boxers but were of the general opinion that quitting now would protect both Alfred’s proud boxing legacy and his health which could deteriorate rapidly were he to actively resume a boxing career.
In a wide ranging interview, Kotey spoke of the relatively small earnings he made during his prime as a boxer and disagreed vehemently with contributors to the programme who thought boxing is a violent sport.
The “cobra” believes that boxers beset with bad managers, indiscipline and lack of support will struggle to become a World champion like he once did.
