The Ghana under 23 athletics team is poised to win the second edition of the ECOWAS (Economic Committee of West African States) games.
After two days of competitions, the athletics contingent is leading the medal table with 10 medals.
Janet Amponsah of the Ghana Police Service was the fastest in the 100m photo finish final. She beat her fiercest rival Josephine Omaka from Nigeria to the finish line.
Mary Quayson of Ghana also won the bronze medal.
Janet posted a time of 11:54 seconds which was good enough to qualify for the Upcoming African Championship in Benin.
Omaka Josephine had a time of 11:52.
Janet is 2 seconds away from qualifying for the Olympic Games and she is confident of making the qualifying time to the Olympic Games.
“I’m confident I can make the time to the Olympic in Benin I just need more training and hard work” said the soft spoken police woman.
The 100m sprint for men was dominated by the Nigerians. Jonathan Nmaji and his colleague Tamunotope Briggs were first and second respectively. Oscar Emmanuel of Ghana managed to pick the bronze.
Ghana’s Azumah Sampson bagged 2 gold medals in the 800m and 15000m, his compatriot Atta Gyamfi Bright was second in both events whilst David Banabas of Nigeria was also third in both events.
Despite winning the 800m and 1500m, Azumah could not qualify for the African Championship. He however believes he should be considered due to poor weather conditions.
“They should consider me because the weather here is bad and it was drawing me back. With a better condition, I would have made it” Azumah told Joy Sports in an interview.
In the field events, Elizabeth Dadzie’s long jump of 5.75m was good enough to win gold and qualify for the African Championship
Eric Amoasi had the longest throw in the Discus. He secured the gold medal with a throw of 37.97m.
The Ghanaian team is confident of maintaining the good start in subsequent events.
