Having lost the athletics competition to rivals Nigeria, the rest of team Ghana in the Handball, Volley ball, and Boxing competition came out all guns blazing to make amends.
Ghana’s 7 Gold and 2 Silver medals feat was however marred by age cheating in the women’s volley ball competition.
The under 19 years female team of Ghana defeated Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Niger to win the Gold medal in the all play all format. The medal was however contested by the Ivoirians.
According to them, one of the Ghanaian players was above the required age of 19 years.
When asked why Ghana was stripped off the gold and later awarded the silver medal, the technical director of the Volley ball competition explained “Ghana featured an over age player and when that was discovered, the girl was disqualified and the rules of the games was applied. The point was then awarded to the opposing team”.
Ivory Coast was eventually awarded the gold, Ghana the silver and Sierra Leone the bronze.
In the men’s division, Ghana won the Gold without any complaint. They outclassed Niger by winning all 3 sets. Benin won the Bronze by beating neighbours Togo by three sets to one.
In the handball competition, Ghana won silver in the ladies category; they were beaten by the Ivoirians with a score of 12-27.
In the men’s handball division the Ghanaians left it late to pip Benin by 29-28 in a hotly contested final.
Top notch boxing display by the Ghanaian boxers and an intimidating presence of Ghanaian support at the Accra sports stadium assisted Ghana to win all the 5 boxing gold medals.
In the Fly weight (52kg) Duke Micah defeated Adande Jesugnon from Benin by a score of 11-6.
Sulemanu Tetteh won the Bantam weight (56kg) contest by beating Okerimde Semiu from Nigeria by 12-9.
The light weight (60kg) battle was like ‘taking candy from a baby’ for Jessie Lartey who surpassed Nigerian Oladosu Ridwan by 17-8.
Lawson Rahman also gave his Nigerian counterpart a boxing lesson in the light weight division of 64kg. The score card read 15-6.
Masebinu Adwane was the toughest Nigerian opponent of the night. His performance was however not good enough to convince the judges who score the fight 15-11 in favor of Emmanuel Martey. This was a middle weight contest (75kg)
Ghana now lead the medal table with 17 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze closely followed by rivals Nigeria with 13 gold,17 silver and 5 bronze.
