Fabio Capello has rounded on Wayne Rooney, claiming he only plays well for Sir Alex Ferguson.
Manchester United striker Rooney had a disappointing Euro 2012, sitting out England's first two games on account of suspension and then delivering a pair of below-par efforts.
The striker scored the winner in the final group game with Ukraine, but it failed to mask a disappointing display while he also made little impression in the quarter-final exit to Italy.
Former England boss Capello has been an interested observer at Euro 2012 and he took the opportunity to question Rooney.
"After seeing the latest game, I think Rooney only understands Scottish," Capello is quoted as saying in the Sun. "That's because he only plays well in Manchester, where Sir Alex Ferguson speaks Scottish."
The Sun claims Capello's barb at Rooney is in reference to the striker's comment following England's appointment of Roy Hodgson as manager when he said: "I think it helps everyone being English. There are no words lost in translation and we understand exactly what the manager wants from us."
Fatigue has been cited as a contributory factor in England's exit and Capello feels the schedule is to blame.
"It is normal they are tired as they are playing a lot and they never stop," Capello said. "I said that when I was England manager and it is not possible to change the schedule in England so they will always arrive at tournaments in the same condition. They are physically and mentally tired."
