The Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana has welcomed the release of funds for payment for their works but wants government to adhere to the payment terms of contracts.
Government yesterday in a statement announced the release of a total of over one billion Ghana cedis to fund the operations of statutory bodies in the first five months of 2012. Out of this, the GET Fund which the contractors have executed projects for received almost 185 million.
The Technical Committee Chairman of the Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana, Rockson Dogbegah has been speaking with JOY BUSINESS.
“If government is releasing funds for the first five months of the year, it implies we would still have about 2 months in arrears. We understand the constraints of government but we would appreciate if government makes funds available on time for projects to prevent the fall in the value of our money” he noted.
The standard conditions of contract require that within 28 days upon submission of a certified claim, payment must be made but this unfortunately doesn’t happen. We would want to see the situation where government would honor this obligation. If not it has an effect on the performance of contractors because if there is no money, it is difficult for the contractor to do his work” he concluded”
