Immediate past Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, says he looks forward to seeing the senior national team in a group that will be easy for Nigeria to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations as the draw for the final round of qualifiers holds tomorrow at Tanz Cafe-Emperors Palace, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Confederation of Africa Football, CAF, had fixed July 5 for the draw of the final round of qualifiers and Nigeria is one of the seeded countries.
“We are all Nigerians and we should all be praying ahead of the draw because if we are in a group that we don’t have difficult teams, it will be easy for us to qualify, but if we are in a group where they have difficult teams, we may have to wait till the last day before we know who will make it,” says the former Arsenal striker.
“We did not qualify for the last Nations Cup and we all know what we lost from that; so, we have to put in all efforts to make sure that we qualify for the Nations Cup this time around. Everything is all about luck and we have to pray for that as well. I want to see Nigeria in a group that will not be difficult for the players to negotiate through.”
Kanu who won gold medal in the football event of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, however advised Super Eagles players to show more seriousness and commitment when the second round of qualifiers kick-off in September.
“Everything is in the hands of the players, and I can only advice them to show more commitment and be focused when the qualifiers resume in September.”
