An industrial action by fuel tanker drivers has disrupted the lifting of petroleum products at the Kumasi depot of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transport Company (BOST). Members of the Ghana Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union have been demonstrating against extortion by security personnel and what they term as the ‘insensitivity of BOST management’. Hundreds of the fuel tanker drivers poured onto the streets at the petroleum depot in Kaasi demanding the immediate removal of the private security agency. They will not yield to assurances from union leaders to resume work whilst their grievances are addressed. “The manager here is disrespectful so we want him changed. Again the security personnel are not concentrating on their core responsibility but extorting money from the drivers. Instead of ensuring people do not steal the products, they are checking road worthy [certificate], income tax and reverse alarm. For these reasons we want the security replaced else we wont resume work today or tomorrow,” averred one of drivers, Patrick Amoako. The Kumasi depot of BOST serves as a loading point for several regions in the northern sector of the country. Failure of the fuel tankers to lift petroleum products on time could adversely affect fuel distribution at pump station. Depot Manager at BOST, Nicholas Samire however told Luv Biz Report there is no cause for alarm. He is optimistic the situation will normalize for oil lifting to resume on Thursday.
