Vodafone Ghana has hinted it is considering providing customers with data packages that would give them unlimited access to the internet in the near future. Data Manager at Vodafone Ghana, Pius Tuffuor told journalists at a workshop “we are working on some packages that would enable customers have unlimited data access at one time fees but it is too early to give details.” The workshop was to explain to journalists how Vodafone’s new modem works and what factors could affect the 14.4megabit/sec speed promised on the modem. Vodafone would be the second to have introduced unlimited data packages after Tigo, which launched similar packages in Mary 2012. Tigo Ghana was the first to launch three unlimited time-based data packages that allows customers to get unending access to the internet a onetime fee for one day, one week or one month. The time-based packages were intended to take away the confusion people have about the measurement of data in megabytes and gigabytes, so that customers would know they are paying specific amounts for a specific period of internet access for all kinds of activities, including browsing, live streaming, downloading on laptops, PCs and phones. On Tigo, 99Gp worth of data gives unlimited access to the internet for 24 hours; GHC5.99 is for one week and GHC39.99 is for one month of unlimited access. But industry experts have said those packages are not necessarily unlimited, but the capacity usually made available to the customer for the period paid for is so high, the customer would hardly be able to consume all within the given period. One expert however said “there is always a limit to how much data one can have for a specific amount paid. So, for instance, if a customer decides to go on a downloading spree after paying 99Gp for just one day of unlimited access that customer would get to a point and realize there is a limit to the capacity available to him or her.” He said service providers usually adopt ways of slowing the system down particularly for persons who have purchased unlimited packages, so that their consumption would necessarily be within the limit of the capacity made available to them. Indeed some customers of Tigo who bought unlimited packages reported they had great speeds initially, but over time the dongle speeds has slowed down remarkably, making even ordinary browsing an unpleasant experience.
