President Francois Hollande’s French government has questioned the astronomical wage figures reportedly granted to Zlatan Ibrahimovic following the Sweden striker’s move from AC Milan to Paris Saint Germain (PSG).
Although figures have not been made public, it is understood Ibrahimovic will see his pay total Eur14 million after tax. Hollande’s socialist government are poised to bring in a super-tax of 75% on incomes over Eur1 million, meaning the 27-year-old would have to receive a salary in the region of Eur70-80 million from Qatar-owned PSG to maintain his take-home pay.
“Between you and me I think a lot of people are shocked by the income the player you are talking about will make,” government spokeswomen Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said, according to Reuters, while Sports Minister Valerie Fourneyron attacked spiralling pay for footballers across Europe at a time of economic hardship. “European clubs’ deficits are worth Eur1.5 billion at the moment – that should be cause for thought,” she added.
French Football League (LFP) president Frederic Thiriez suggested in February that Hollande’s proposed tax changes would lead to the departure of up to 150 players from Ligue 1 – around a quarter of the total – sowing the seeds of the “death of French football”.
