Residents of Nsiana in the Amansie West district of Ashanti Region are demanding a return of their lands currently being used by some Chinese miners for galamsey operations.
The residents who accuse the Chinese miners of occupying the land illegally and contaminating their river source, confronted them Thursday morning.
But the Chinese, numbering about 10 armed with pump action guns fired at the residents.
Luv FM’s Kwabena Ampretwum who visited the vicinity spoke to the Wirempehene of the area who denied knowledge of the activities of Chinese illegal miners operating in the area for the past three months.
According to the Wirempehene, sometime ago, one of the chiefs accompanied a Ghanaian to his palace to seek a permit to mine in the area.
The Wirempehene maintained that he turned them away with the explanation that it is only the Minerals Commission that can grant such a permit.
A meeting held Thursday afternoon between the residents of Nsiana, the Amanise West Police Commander and the Chiefs of the area concluded that the illegal Chinese miners are driven out of the area immediately.
The meeting also established that the Chinese miners did not possess any permit covering their operationS in the area.
The Police are expected to come out with the modalities in evacuating the illegal miners from the area and hand the lack back to the indigenes to continue their farming activities.
