Great Britain’s manager, Stuart Pearce has gone on to reveal that he will be monitoring Daniel Sturridge in the upcoming friendly against Brazil, as he hopes to try and get a better idea of the striker’s fitness.
The Chelsea forward went on to suffer from viral meningitis and this went on to cause there to be major doubts over his participation with the Olympic team.
Despite the problems that the twenty two year old forward is facing, Pearce has admitted that he is quite impressed by Sturridge and doesn’t want to rule him out of his squad, till he gets a better look at him in action.
"He looks very good, to be fair," Pearce told reporters. "Obviously, we are hoping to play him in some part of the game tomorrow, and really make a final judgment call at that stage.”
"But everything we have asked of him at the moment, he's done. He's come through that OK.
"He has been blowing on occasions when he has done, but I think the game from a physical point of view, will tell us quite a lot."
He then went on to admit that his ultimate aim, was to try and get the team ready for the game against Senegal. In order to do that, he wants the players to gain their fitness and confidence.
"As I said to them when they first walked through the door, we need to be peaking for the Senegal game and we have to accept that we are going to get fitter and stronger day by day.”
Last season Sturridge didn’t manage to secure a first team spot with Chelsea, but the time that he did spend on the pitch, showed just what he is capable of.
The striker was often used as a substitute to have an impact on the games and he went on to do what was asked of him, rather effectively.
Pearce is well aware of this fact and knows that the England international can prove to be a difference maker in his team’s upcoming matches.
As a result, it is now up to Sturridge to fight against his injuries and secure a spot in the Olympic squad.
