The athletes who will be the team captains for the Jamaican track and field contingent at the London Olympics will be decided at a meeting of the team later today at their University of Birmingham base.
In a meeting between members of the Jamaican media and team management at Lucas House, across the road from the team accommodations, team manager Ludlow Watts said the team captains would be decided and the recommendations forwarded to the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), under whose auspices the camp is being held.
According to Watts, the JAAA treasurer and men’s team manager here, the persons chosen will have team respect, have leadership skills, and be able to communicate with management and whomever else they will need to.
Given that there are four sports being contested by Jamaica at the Olympics, the flag bearer would not be known until the JOA officials meet, Watts said, but hinted that given the high profiles of the track and field team here and the overwhelming percentage of track athletes in the 50-member contingent, it seemed more likely the flag bearer could be a track athlete.
