Poultry farmers are demanding the reinstitution of the National Poultry Council which was dissolved by the NDC government in 2009.
The farmers claim the absence of such a body for the formulation of policies to protect their interest could be somewhat blamed for their current woes of high cost of production and the influx of imported chicken.
According to the National Chairman, Kwadwo Asante, 7 out of 12 hatcheries in the country have already folded up and the remaining five are operating below capacity
He tells JOY BUSINESS, the industry’s imminent collapse cannot be over emphasized if government does not demonstrate extra commitment to protect it.
“Its not profitable because the production is is around 80 to 90 percent. So any slight challenge we face leads to the collapse of the business. That’s why we’re advocating the re-institution of the council. We have to sit down with the minister and look at ways of minimising the challenges” he noted.
