The National Security Coordinator Col. (Rtd.) Gbevlo Lartey has risen to the defence of the embattled Executive Secretary of the Narcotic Control Board who is contemplating resigning his position. Gbevlo Lartey insists Akrasi Sarpong has done more than enough in the fight against drugs in Ghana and cannot be asked to resign over a few breaches. Ghana late last week made headlines for the wrong reasons after a haul of drugs impounded at Heathrow Airport were discovered to have passed through the Ghana airport. On Thursday, the biggest cannabis haul from Ghana with a street market of £4.3million was seized at the Heathrow Airport. It was the biggest seizure in three years. A day later, British officials announced that they have intercepted a consignment of cocaine weighing 7.5kg and which were concealed in plantains from Ghana. The arrests and seizure have revived issues about drugs in Ghana with some calling for the resignation of the NACOB boss. In an interview with Joy News, Mr. Akrasi Sarpong said he had taken responsibility for the breaches in security at the airport which allowed the drugs to pass. The NACOB officials were said to have vacated their post at the time the consignments were smuggled through the system. Mr. Sarpong said he was contemplating resigning over the matter. A deputy Interior Minister under the erstwhile Kufuor administration, Capt. (retd) Effah Darteh has also waded into the controversy demanding the resignation of the NACOB boss. But the National Security Coordinator, Gbevlo Lartey, in an interview with Joy News said Akrasi Sarpong “will not resign today, he will not resign tomorrow.” He said the quality of work done by Akrasi Sarpong so far was commendable and he will not be sacrificed merely because of these two breaches. He stated however that measures have been put in place to correct the lapses at the airport.
