Liverpool were denied an injury-time winner as they played out a 2-2 draw against Everton in a pulsating Merseyside derby on Sunday.A Leighton Baines own-goal and Luis Suarez's header put the Reds two up after 20 minutes, but Leon Osman and Steven Naismith were on hand to rescue a valuable point for the hosts.Suarez looked to have stolen all three points in the fourth minute of added time, although the linesman incorrectly ruled the goal out for off-side.The result saw the Toffees climb to fifth in the table with 16 points from their opening nine matches, while their city rivals are 12th on 10 points.Both sides looked lively right from kick-off and created plenty of scoring chances, although the final ball was lacking at both ends.The visitors were eventually gifted the opener as Jonjo Shelvey picked up a loose ball before breaking in on goal and squaring across the area, with the pass going all the way through to Luis Suarez, whose return ball took a wicked deflection off Baines before flying into the back of the net.Just six minutes later and Liverpool doubled their advantage, Suarez finding himself completely unmarked in the area to run onto Steven Gerrard's free-kick to get the slightest of touches to guide the ball past Tim Howard.Two minutes later Everton were back in it as Brad Jones could only punch his clearance straight to Osman on the edge of the area, with the midfielder controlling with his chest before rifling a low drive into the back of the net.Ten minutes before the break David Moyes' men found the equaliser as Marouane Fellaini received possession inside the area before turning and putting the ball across the face of goal, where Naismith came storming in to tap home a simple goal.Brendan Rodgers' troops had a great chance to retake the lead shortly after the restart, but Raheem Sterling opted for an audacious chipped effort instead of squaring for the unmarked Suarez, and the chance went begging.The home team were soon appealing frantically for a penalty at the other end as Martin Skrtel appeared to go right through the back of Baines inside the area, although the referee turned away the appeals despite the incident looking a legitimate penalty.The sides continued to exchange blows and Nikica Jelavic probably should have found the back of the net from a free-kick but headed well wide after finding himself in a great scoring position.Suarez and the entire travelling contingent thought they had snatched the points right at the death as the Uruguay international rifled his shot into the roof of the net from close range, but the celebrations were cut short as the linesman had already flagged for offside, although replays show the match official got it wrong.
