Students of the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies are demanding a ban on evening lectures following the alleged rape of a female student.
Many of them are reportedly in fear because of other criminal activities in the area. Some of them who spoke to Joy News are appealing to authorities to ensure adequate security as soon as possible.
The students therefore organized a demonstration on campus to register their disapproval of the kneejerk approach usually adopted by the school’s authorities to address their plight, the students told our correspondent.
Some of the students who said they are victims of attacks on campus insisted that the authorities ban evening lectures that usually start from 5pm to 7pm.
But the Dean of the Wa campus Prof. Francis Bacho told Joy News the situation is a spillover of general insecurity in the area and in the region as a whole.
He said street lights are all over the campus with enhanced night patrol.
“No responsible authority will just sit down and watch students being attacked, nobody is just sitting down idle, even the lecturers themselves as worry about this problem.”
He partly blamed students for using unapproved routes.
