Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey was elected as the next Secretary-General of the Commonwealth on Saturday, pledging to make the organisation a vibrant, people-centred institution.
Standing before Commonwealth Heads of Government in Apia, Samoa, she expressed gratitude, humility, and a strong commitment to her new role.
“I feel deeply honoured to be elected as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth,” she said, pledging, “I will do everything in my power to be worthy of your confidence and trust.”
In her acceptance speech, Ms Botchwey underscored the historical significance of her election, being the second successive woman to hold the role.
“By electing me…the Heads of government have continued the tradition of the Commonwealth as a history-making organisation,” she remarked.
Addressing her vision, Ms Botchwey laid out a bold plan to reshape the Commonwealth’s connection to its citizens.
“I pledge to work for a Commonwealth of the Peoples,” she said.

“This is your organisation. Let’s join hands to facilitate the political will necessary for transformation and resilience building.”
Ms Botchwey’s platform focuses on tackling climate change, upholding democratic values, boosting trade among Commonwealth nations, and empowering young people and women through education and technology.
She stated that her goal is for a Commonwealth that “seizes the moment with imagination, innovation, creativity, and boldness” to address the people's aspirations and protect the planet.
At 61, with nearly eight years as Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Ms. Botchwey will succeed Baroness Patricia Scotland on April 1, 2025.
Her leadership aims to reinvigorate the Commonwealth, bridging its legacy with the challenges of the modern world.
