The National Unity Movement views with dismay that over five decades after independence, African has not been able to put real meaning to her independence in terms of social, economic and political advancement. A close examination registers unfavorable returns all round.The African Countries and even the greater part of the Third World find themselves in a sate of fluidity leading to negative achievements due in the main to violence, disunity and the foriegnisation in the area of our politics, keeping Africa in the twilight.If Africa were to get itself rid of the massive poverty, then obviously, there is the need for the people to unite each applying his expertise, skill and experience to the national reconstruction without any exclusion based solely on partisan consideration.For the past 50 years or more, African countries have been struggling to achieve Western style Democracy through partisan politics, which unfortunately has resulted in misunderstanding, violence, dangerous polarization and politics of insults.Haiti and Liberia have practiced the party system for about 200 years a piece and still remain into grip of political violence due to the differences in culture social and the economic background of the African.Members of the political parties seeking to get the edge in the struggle for political power over their opponents indulge in insults and condemnation which in turn breed hatred and violence, denying the nation, the peace and unity so much needed for national development.All well meaning Ghanaians and some Africans are unhappy about this trend which seems unending as all efforts to curb them have proved futile, thereby causing people to call for God’s intervention to give the nation a peaceful election this year.Calling for God’s intervention obviously is the right thing to do when danger seems to be on the horizon.However, in this particular situation it appears the solution is in our own hands.As the political party system has become too hot to handle the answer obviously is simply dropping it.Having established politics of insults, violence and dangerous polarization is the stock in trade of the political parties; we should simply drop partisan politics to create peace and unity for the good of Ghana.We should then adopt the District Assembly System as set out in the 1992 Constitution whereby every Constituency would be given the right to elect its own MP without any political party participation. Then the MPs in Parliament would elect one member to be the leader who will then become the President.This is cheap, peaceful and unifying to implement a national development plan.In this way the politics of insults, polarization and violence would surely be consigned into the oblivion.This will bring us closer to our God given system of unity.
