About two hundred psychiatric patients are going to be discharged from the Accra Psychiatric Hospital following a strike action by nurses at the facility.

Nurses at the hospital on Monday, October 31, began an indefinite strike due to inadequate protection from aggressive inmates and lack of basic logistics there.

Although the government says it is working around the clock to find the needed funds for the facility, it has yet to redeem its pledge.

The decision by the nurses to go on strike has triggered the mass discharge of patients there.

A doctor at the facility, Selassie Adom told Joy News: "It is something we already do but now we want to do it on a bigger scale because the nurses are not on the psychiatric wards." 

She said they would visit the wards on Tuesday, November 1, to check the conditions of the inmates before any recommendation to discharge them will be made.

She added that relatives of patients who are well enough to go home have been invited to come for them.

She, however, added that transportation arrangements will be made for patients whose relatives do not show up.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, Dr. Akwasi Osei said measures are in place for community psychiatric nurses to monitor the inmates who will be released.
