The immediate past Minister of Defence and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential aspirant, Dr. Philip Kwame Addo Kufuor has called on delegates who would be attending the December congress to vote for him because be was the one that broke the invincibility surrounding the Burma Camp in Accra, which is considered as the constituency of former President Rawlings. He said before NPP assumed office in January 2001, Burma Camp was considered as a fearsome territory where only courageous people could enter but he was able to erase that fear when he was posted to head the Defence Ministry. The former Defence Minister, who is currently on tour in the Central Region canvassing for votes, said if he was able to erase the fear surrounding Burma Camp then he had the capacity to lead the country. Dr. Addo Kufuor further told would be delegates that when NPP came to power with his brother as the President, many were those who thought that he would be posted to head the Health Ministry because of the previous role he played as Shadow Minister of Health when the party was in the opposition. He said he himself was a bit nervous when his brother posted him to the Defence Ministry instead because of the existence of the 64 Infantry battalion and the various commandos units not forgetting the 31st December Women's Movement who were all over the places. "I went there without knowing anybody and entered my office as Minister. As I sat down on my seat, I was thinking about how to survive in the Ministry because the place was where Rawlings’ power resid¬ed", he said. Dr, Addo Kufuor noted that notwithstanding the fear he had about the Ministry, he still mustered courage to dismantle the dreaded 64 Battalion and the various commandos units created by former President Rawlings. “As time progressed that day, I occasionally peeped through the window to satisfy my curiosity as to what was going on outside,” he said. Dr. Addo Kufuor said he later gathered courage to dismantle the 64 Infantry Battalion and commando units thereby erasing the scarecrow of Burma Camp. Source: The Chronicle
