Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan is set to appear before a parliamentary select committee Wednesday, to answer questions about the seeming lack of confidence in the Commission to organize credible elections.
The meeting is expected to be behind close doors.
Speaking to Joy News, a member of the committee Derrick Yaw Oduro says MPs are skeptical about the Commission’s ability to organize a free and fair 2016 elections following the controversies that surrounded the 2012 polls.
“The perception that the EC will not be able to conduct the forthcoming general elections is not a joke”, he complained.
“There are so many accusations, counter accusations that have even led to court actions,” he said, adding that has contributed to the seeming lack of confidence in the EC.
The situation has been worsened by recent controversy over the EC’s intentions to open the registration process for prospective voters who have just turned 18.
Some political parties and civil society groups have questioned the intention by the EC to register new voters when the current voters register is said to contain some unqualified voters.
Critics are therefore asking the EC to clean the register before proceeding to add new voters to it.
The MPs insist the Commission should “restore” confidence amongst the populace by telling the committee measures it has outlined to run a clean election in 2016.
“This appearance before Parliament will let people reassure themselves that maybe something better will be in store for all of us”, the MP reiterated.
