The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has written to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWL), urging the immediate restoration of water supply to the Effutu Municipality.
In a letter dated August 20, 2025, Mr Afenyo-Markin stated that the water disruption has persisted for "more than two weeks" and is causing "unbearable hardship" for the population of over 140,000.
The letter details the severe impact of the water shortage across multiple sectors of the community:
- Public Health: Hospitals and clinics are unable to maintain basic hygiene standards, leading to a sharp escalation in the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera and dysentery.
- Education: Schools and tertiary institutions are struggling to operate without a reliable source of safe water, which has compromised sanitation and posed a direct threat to the health and safety of students.
- Households: Families are being forced to rely on irregular and expensive private water suppliers, disrupting daily routines and disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
- Economic Activity: The lack of water has paralyzed small businesses, including food vendors, hospitality operators, and artisans, resulting in a significant loss of income and a broader slowdown in local commerce.
Mr Afenyo-Markin’s letter, addressed to the Managing Director of GWL, requests an "immediate clarification on the cause of this disruption".
He also demanded a timeline for when residents can expect a full restoration of uninterrupted water supply, highlighting that the crisis has "compounded sanitation challenges" and is threatening the "overall socio-economic well-being" of the municipality.
A copy of the letter was also sent to the Minister of Works, Housing, and Water Resources.
