An academician has expressed worry about the unhealthy relationship between government and opposition parties in some African countries. Professor Daniel Buor, Provost of College of Arts and Social Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, urged governments and opposition parties in Africa to tolerate each other since nation building requires a shared responsibility at all levels. Prof. Buor was speaking at the launch of “Truth”, a Kumasi-based newspaper on the theme: “Sustaining Good Governance and Democracy – the Role of the Media”, in Kumasi. He noted that some opposition parties in Africa oppose good policies of government because of the suspicion of perpetuation of power by government. Prof. Buor said: “on the other hand, some African governments perceive the opposition as obstacle to their perpetuation of power and would wish they were hounded out of the political arena through fair or foul means.” He asked African governments and opposition parties to unite and tackle the problems impeding the continent’s development. Prof. Buor charged African leaders to uphold rule of law, transparency and accountability to ensure effective utilization of resources. He called for regular training programmes for media practitioners to enable them to discharge the duties professionally. Mr. Kofi Opoku-Manu, Ashanti Regional Minister, appealed to management of the newspaper to be circumspect in its role of educating, informing and entertaining the public. Mr. Sebastian Freiku, Managing Editor and Publisher of “Truth”, said the newspaper that would be published every Monday would expose wrong doings and strive to deepen Ghana’s democracy. Source: GNA
