The African Regent Hotel has donated a sum of GHȻ5,000 to the Korle-Bu National Center for Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine.

The donation, which took place on October 18, was part of the hotel’s campaign to support breast cancer patients in the breast cancer awareness month.

Moved by the statistics of patients with breast cancer who are not able to pay for their bills, the ‘Afropolitan’ hotel led by Miss Marian Darkwah, the Sales & Marketing Manager presented a cheque to the unit to help in the treatment of affected patients.

October is known worldwide as a month dedicated to increase awareness breast cancer and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

The hotel launched the Pink Month celebrations in a quest to create awareness and support breast cancer patients on October 2.

“The health and wellness of our staff is at the heart of our operation as a company, therefore as we join millions across the world to fight against this disease,” Joyce Graham, the Human Resource Manager of the hotel said at the event organized to donate the cheque.

“We begin with our staff as a point of reference to every person who needs to hear about the gospel according to breast cancer,” she added.

Joyce Graham explained that since breast cancer has become a leading cause of death in many women in Ghana, the company is committed to the fighting against it.

Clients and staff at the launch were encouraged to have their breasts examined at the African Regent hotel’s partner hospitals – Nyaho Medical Center and Lapaz Community Hospital.

The fight against breast cancer will not be efficient without a good amount of knowledge of it. In light of this fact, to precede the donation to the center the company organized an interactive talk session on early diagnosis of breast cancer with Dr. Naa Adorkor Aryeetey, Specialist Radiation Oncologist at the National Center for Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine.

Question and answer session

The talk and question and answering session helped answer questions about breast cancer and the importance of early diagnosis. It was followed by an examination by a group of nurses from the Korle-Bu Breast Team, where staff, both men and women took turns to get their breasts screened.

“There has been much ‘noise’ about breast cancer this month, and we have joined in the ‘noise making’ right from the beginning of the month. Our quest for fighting against the breast cancer disease would not be complete without this donation to the center,” Miss Marian Darkwah, Sales & Marketing Manager at the African Regent Hotel said.

She stated that the company have created the awareness this month, primarily for the staff and given them education on why it is important to get checked regularly in order to ensure early detection.

“Now is the time to show love and support to those affected. We know the center is capable of providing adequate treatment with proper funding, and also with the same funding, undertake research to improve the life expectancy of affected individuals.” Miss Marian Darkwah added.

The cheque was presented to Madam Sabina Kotei, Principal Administrative Manager at the Center for Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine.

Madam Sabina was joined by Dr. Naa Adorkor Aryeetey, Specialist Radiation Oncologist, Madam Juliana Tagoe, Principal Nursing Officer, Mrs. Hannah Owusu Addo, Administrative Manager, and Mr. Adu Sarkodie, Principal Biomedical Scientist to receive the donation on behalf of the Center.
