An intended demolition exercise of unauthorized stalls in Kaneshie in Accra, by the task force of the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA) has turned violent. This followed a strong resistance by an irate crowd led by the MP for Okaikoi South, Ahmed Arthur. The police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
According to Joy News’ Paa Kwesi Asare, the task force was able to demolish several of the stalls in spite of the fierce resistance by the crowd, including traders. The MP for the area contended that his intervention stems from the fact that the people where not given any prior notice, adding, the parcel of land with unauthorized structures has been earmarked for a Community Center towards the development of the youth in the area.It was therefore out of place “for someone who does not have the jurisdiction and the locus to come and demolish these structures with the intention of putting up stalls here”, he said.He also condemned the Police for using tear gas and firing rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. He bemoaned the outright disregard for the safety of persons who had been jostled by the Police. He complained about one person who had been whisked to the police station for questioning from the hospital, where he was receiving treatment after falling unconscious having been hit by a rubber bullet fired by the police.
Even though it is unclear what the AMA will do next, the demolition exercise is likely to affect over 100 persons.
