A leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alfred Woyome, has warned of massive defeat for any political party in the 2012 general elections which seeks to rationalize homosexuality in the country. His outburst comes at the back of calls by some members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Ghanaians to soberly reflect on the threat by the British Prime Minister David Cameron instead of castigating him. The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, Gifty Ohene Konadu is reported to have said homosexuals are human beings who must enjoy their rights and not to be condemned. MP for New Juaben North, Hackman Owusu Agyemang, having Ghana's relations with its colonial masters in mind, appealed to Ghanaians to express their legitimate concerns in a more civil manner. The former Foreign Affairs Minister believes attacks on the David Cameron could obliterate Ghana’s relations with United Kingdom. But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Alfred Woyome opined that attempts by any political party to support such practices just for political expediency would fall flat on their face in 2012. He said the immense commendation from the citizenry on President J.E.A Mills’ reply to the UK Prime Minister attest to the fact that they all frown upon such practice. Alfred Woyome said the customs and traditions of the country would not be traded for any satanic practice just to secure an annual budgetary support to the country. On a possible economic consequences should the UK execute the threat, he observed that so called budgetary support is generated from the visa fees Ghanaians pay to the UK Embassy. The former Vice Honorary Consul of Austria explained that the UK makes about one billion pounds every year from visa fees, hence if Ghanaians boycott paying the fees, they will equally risk losing substantial amount of their revenue to support their economy. Alfred Woyome joined calls for stiffer laws against homosexuality in the country as a means to deter people from engaging in it.
