Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has praised Kwadwo Asamoah for being very versatile and says he brings an extra quality to the national team.
Since the turn of the year, Asamoah has operated from a left back role for Ghana and started the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in the same opposition as the Black Stars drew 2-2 with DR Congo.
Asamoah apart from his attacking forays from a deeper position, capped a great performance with goal at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday and Appiah believes the player adds some extra to Ghana's dynamic play.
The goal was the player's first at a Nations Cup tournament.
“Kwadwo [Asamoah] is a utility player, he does very well in any position you put him in,” Ghana's coach Kwesi Appiah said.
The player was pushed up the field in the last 10 minutes of the entertaining Group B match and although Ghana did not always have things their own way, Appiah says he was satisfied with the performance of the Juventus player.
“He defends very well and for me, he did very well at the back.”
The Ghana coach explains that, Asamoah's defensive role did not deprive the team any attacking presence.
“We had competent people up-front who could play almost the same as he could have done.
“He being at the back was no problem. But in the second half, I decided to bring him up front to increase the attack,” he added.
“It’s just unfortunate that [we did not get] what we were expecting, automatically when you go into a first game, you expect to get a win, unfortunately, we could get it today.”
Ghana plays Mali, who top the group on Thursday.
