A 19-year-old suspected armed robber described by the police as "hardened", has been arrested at Besease, near Ejisu, in the Ashanti region after a one year hunt by the police.
Ahmed Yusif, in the company of three accomplices on the run, were said to have raided a house at Besease and made away with some personal belongings.
The items which were estimated at ¢14 million, included a television set, mobile telephones and their chargers as well as a computer.
Yusif who is said to be the leader, allegedly shot Alice Kyei, wife of the landlord in both legs as she attempted escaping from the raid.
He appeared before a Kumasi High Court on Friday, charged with armed robbery but pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecuting, a state attorney, Kyei Baffour Brentoh, told the court, presided over by Justice Kwame Ansu-Gyaebour, that the alleged robbery took place on December 24, 2005. On June 25, 2006, a daughter of Alice Kyei, who was at home at the time of the robbery, sported him at the Besease market and raised an alarm leading to Yusif’s arrest by some on lookers who handed him over to the police.
A search of his house by the police revealed several dangerous implements such as cutlasses, knive chisels, screw-drivers, pliers as well as sieves and hammers.
Others were car tapes, wrist watches and climbing belts.
He has been remanded into prison custody for two weeks.
In a related development, 21 suspects have been remanded in prison custody for various offences including narcotics, loittering and unlawful entries as well as robberies.
They were rounded up by the police at the Race Course, Asokwa, Alabar, Oforikrom and Bompata all described as havens for armed robbers.
Philip Safo, also known as Safo Asante, 37, was arrested with 661 wrapers of whitish substance believed to be cocaine.
He was arrested at the Tafo cemetery where he had been allegedly plying his narcotic trade.
Inspector Yusif Mohammed Tanko of the Police Public Affairs Unit, said that 200 suspects were arrested during the operation and after searching, 24 were charged. They had all been remanded for two weeks.
