It may have been one of football’s worst kept secrets of recent years, but today Arsenal officially unveiled German sportswear giant Puma as the London club’s official kit manufacturer from next season.
In what is to believed to be one of the most lucrative sponsorship deals ever, Puma will pay Arsenal the princely sum of £30 million a year for the next five years for the right to adorn ‘The Gunners’ kits and teamwear with their famous leaping cat logo.
Arsenal have enjoyed a fruitful relationship with American sportswear giants Nike for the past 20 years – one of first ‘big name’ European clubs the brand were able to secure. Nike were offered the opportunity to re-new the deal but balked at the astronomical figures involved. It seems Arsenal were subject to a three-way bidding war, with Adidas believed to be favorites to win the contract last summer, before Puma – their neighbors and rivals – swooped in.
Many mock-ups have been doing the rounds online since the deal became common knowledge, however this picture – featuring Gunners legend Thierry Henry, ex-Olympic sprinter Linford Christie and current players Bacary Sagna and Olivier Giroud- which was mistakenly tweeted by Christie last year seems to be the best indication yet of what Arsenal will be sporting next season.
