Gael Clichy is expected to open talks with Arsenal about extending his contract with the club, Goal.com UK understands.
The defender’s current deal expires in 2012 and the club recognise the need to tie one of their most valuable players to a longer and improved contract.
Despite a recent dip in form, Clichy is widely regarded as one of the finest left-backs in Europe.
Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the clubs who have enquired about the player and there are fears at Emirates Stadium that the two Spanish giants will attempt to sign him once the transfer window opens.
Clichy, 24, is Arsenal’s longest-serving player after making his debut for the club in the 2003-04 season following a switch from Cannes.
Arsenal have a policy of tying their young squad to long-term deals. The club have given wage increases to 17 players whose contracts have been extended over the past 12 months.
Goal.com UK revealed earlier this week that Cesc Fabregas, who is also represented by Clichy’s agent Darren Dein, renegotiated a new deal last year that hiked his wages to £110,000-a-week to make him the best-paid player in Arsenal’s history.
Although Clichy is believed to be among Arsenal’s mid-ranking earners with a salary of around £55,000-a-week, he can expect a significant rise if terms can be agreed with the club.
