Manchester City scored at least four goals in a home match for the eighth time this season as Premier League leaders Arsenal became the latest team to be blown away at the Etihad.
Sergio Aguero, who would later depart with a calf injury, opened the scoring with a fine volley, which Theo Walcott equalised midway through the first half. However, Alvaro Negredo put City 2-1 up with a goal that also saw Laurent Koscielny suffer a deep cut to his knee, ending his match.
Even with Aguero departing early in the second half, City continued to look threatening in attack and Fernandinho powered them 3-1 ahead. Walcott finished a superb team goal with a sublime finish to pull Arsenal back into the match, but that lasted barely moments as David Silva restored the two-goal advantage.
Fernandinho, superb throughout for City, scored their fifth goal with a delicate finish, before Per Mertesacker scored what appeared to be the last goal of the game deep in injury time. However, there was still time for James Milner to win a penalty, which was converted with assurance by Yaya Toure.
Despite the result, Arsenal remain top of the Premier League table, but are now just three points clear of City, who are averaging over three goals per league match despite some wretched away form.
