National Democratic Congress General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia has kicked against proposals for the tenure of Electoral Commission members to be fixed.

Some political parties including the New Patriotic Party and the Convention People's Party have suggested that the tenure of the Commissioners be fixed, as is done in other jurisdictions.

At a workshop organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs in Koforidua to review the country’s electoral system, some party leaders argued the Commission was taking undue advantage of its autonomy and becoming intransigent.

But the NDC General Secretary insisted there were no flaws in the existing arrangement for the Commissioners.

According to him, there is no need to change the law.

Participants at the workshop also resolved that provisions in the regulations which states that “no verification, no vote” be maintained and enforced.

They also called for election petitions to be disposed off expeditiously to improve public trust in the judiciary.

Fellow of the IEA Dr Ransford Gyampoh tells Joy News the recommendations will be forwarded to the Electoral Commission.
