From next year, the Atiwa District Assembly would make provision in its budget to reward facilitators of the Non-Formal Division of the Ghana Education Service(NFED), who have been voluntarily helping to educate illiterates and school dropouts in the area. This was announced by the Atiwa District Chief Executive, Mr Emmanuel Atta-Twum, at Kwabeng during the presentation of incentives to five facilitators of the NFED, who had offered voluntary service for 21 months to the 13th batch of learners. Each of the facilitators was presented with a packet of roofing sheets. Mr Atta-Twum asked officials of NFED to bring their broken down motor bicycles to the Assembly for repairs. The Eastern Regional Director of the NFED, Mr Lawson Saaka said currently the NFED not only mobilized adult illiterates but also school dropouts, who are 15 years old and above to teach them to read and write and also to acquire occupational skills to enable them to undertake developmental activities. He said the Division also collaborated with other organizations including the Ministry of Food and Agriculture; Ministry of Health and National Commission on Civic Education, and added that tuition and all teaching and learning aids were provided free to the participants. Mr Saaka said the greatest challenge facing the programme was absenteeism and lateness of the learners to their meetings and, therefore, appealed to assembly members, chiefs and other opinion leaders in the communities to support the programme to help it to succeed. Mr Franklin M. K. Boafo, who chaired the function, called on the NFED to upgrade the knowledge of the facilitators to enable them to improve upon their performances.
