The Chairman of the Ghana Athletics Association who is also the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Professor Francis Dodoo has expressed his delight at the performance of young athletes at the just ended Ghana International Grand Prix. The athletics chief was full of praise for the young lads who held their own in the various competitions on the race tracks.“Agnes Abu(1500m) and Solomon Afful (200m) are two athletes together with a few more that I have seen compete who look a sure bet for the future. All they need at the moment is a certain level of guidance and specialist training that would catapult them to the high echelons of the sport.”Abu was superior to her competitors as she won the ladies 1500m event with Afful holding his own in the Men’s 200m.Though he failed to place within the first five, he showed a lot of potential that has got the bosses of the sport looking up to him with high hopes especially as he is still a Junior Athlete. He is among nine athletes who are scheduled to leave the shores of Ghana tomorrow to compete at the World Juniors event scheduled for Barcelona Spain.According to Professor Dodoo, a few training programmes are being worked out for the lads to significantly improve their standards and technique. He also revealed that plans are far advanced to send some of these athletes to the High Performance Center in Dakar, Senegal to upgrade them.
