The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the Ayawaso East by-election, Baba Jamal, has urged his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding as voting progresses in the constituency.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, March 3, after casting his ballot at the Alhaji Iddrisu House 2 polling station, he described the electoral process as largely peaceful despite what he said had been a challenging political journey.
Baba Jamal noted that the path from the party primaries to election day had not been easy but expressed gratitude for reaching this stage.
“So far, I've been to several polling stations, the process has been very peaceful,” he said, adding that he had personally visited more than 25 polling centres across the constituency.
He commended the police for their role in maintaining order, stating that security personnel had handled the process professionally.
While acknowledging low voter turnout in the early hours, Baba Jamal attributed this to the constituency’s predominantly Muslim population observing Ramadan, but expressed confidence, saying, "I know it will pick up as the day goes by."
The NDC aspirant stressed the importance of fairness and peace throughout the exercise.
“I've already advised all my supporters to stay calm and also be law-abiding. We want to see a peaceful process. We want to see a peaceful election,” he said.
He also expressed hope that he would be given the opportunity to serve the people of Ayawaso East.
“It is God that makes kings. My prayer is that if God is doing his king, God will remember me in his blessings. And let me have the opportunity to lead the people of East Ayawaso and to prove a point for my people,” he added.
