The Managing Editor of the Al Hajj newspaper, Alhaji Iddrisu Bature has revealed that former President Rawlings is the official campaign manager for his wife Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings who is widely expected to contest President Mills in the party's upcoming presidential primaries.
According to him, former President Rawlings’ visit to Tamale is part of his campaign tour to canvass for votes for his wife whom he (Rawlings) believes would make a greater impact for the party to win the 2012 elections.
Former President Rawlings on Monday was reported to have asked party executives to reject President Mills ahead of their upcoming presidential primaries accusing him (Mills) of failing to fulfill the party's elections 2008 campaign promises - fighting corruption, pursuing justice for unresolved murders and upholding morality in the country.
Alhaji Bature on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday explained that former President Rawlings, by sending a signal that he will not campaign for the party if his wife does not win the NDC’s presidential primaries is deliberately scheming to send the party back into opposition.
He accused former President Rawlings, his wife and President Mills of destroying the party by putting their personal interest first than uniting the party and urged party supporters to demonstrate against them.
“I want the NDC supporters to bring pressure to bear on President Mills, on former President Rawlings; on Nana Konadu not to toy with millions of people’s lives.
Alhaji Bature stressed that “if this matter is not resolved within the next one month, I can tell you (that) NDC will go back into opposition. There is no doubt”.
But aide to former president Rawlings Kofi Adams has downplayed these comments, maintaining that the former President's visit to Tamale is to sympathize with the Andani family who were not happy with the ruling on the Ya-Na murder.
He said the former president’s outreach to Tamale was not intended to campaign for any candidate but to urge NDC members to help unite the party.
