National Security has imposed a temporal ban on motor-riding in Bawku in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The ban which takes immediate effect on Thursday, April 8, 2010, is geared towards reducing the spate of lawlessness and murders in the area. Bawku has known little peace and has recently become a breeding ground for ethnic blood-bath between Kusasis and the Mamprusis. The ban on motor riding comes just days after the Interior Minister Martin Hamidu renewed the curfew in the area and hours after a state of emergency was announced. formation Minister, John Tia noted the ban will in no small way mitigate the spate of violence in the area. According to him, many of the killings have been done with the help of motor bikes because the gun men immediate flee from the crime scene. The Information Minister believes the ban is in the supreme interest of the residents, but they think otherwise. Some of the residents who spoke to Joy News lamented the crippling effect the ban will have on their livelihoods. The motor bikes are sometimes used as commercial transport in the area.
