A security analyst at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Centre, Dr Kwasi Aning has rubbished government’s latest threat to clamp down on faceless individuals alleged to be sponsoring clashes in the troubled Upper East Regional town of Bawku. The Information Minister John Tia on Thursday warned of dire consequences to the trouble makers whose hands he said are dripping with blood and who will soon face the full rigors of the law. John Tia accused these faceless elements in Accra for being behind the crisis, tendering as evidence a “T” Shirt which he claims has the tendency to provoke ethnic animosity . But Dr Kwasi Aning told Joy News, the minister’s declaration is just a “plaster on the sours” of the victims of the Bawku crisis and an “insult to the collective intelligence of Ghanaians.” He found it rather unfortunate that government claimed it knew the culprits behind the Bawku crisis but instead of arresting them chose rather to warn them via a press conference. Dr Aning said the declaration by the information minister is good enough ammunition for the trouble makers to change their strategies, assuming the claims by the minister is true. He described as “ad-hoc” national security’s ban on riding of motor bikes in the area. The ban was imposed on Thursday as a measure to mitigate the spate of violence which is assuming an alarming proportion. But Dr Aning said the ban as a measure is doomed to fail because it is the wrong approach to adopt. He expects the violence to escalate if no concerted-well-thought-out-plan is executed to arrest the situation. He was appalled that successive governments have failed to tap into his rich experience to bring lasting peace to Bawku. But the Information Minister in his response challenged the security expert to provide alternative solution to the crisis. He was equally disappointed that Dr. Aning continuously casts aspersions on government’s policies on Bawku and yet fails to provide alternative solutions.
