Some residents of Bawku Central have expressed shock at an Accra High court ruling annulling the results of the recent Parliamentary election won by Adamu Dramani. They fear the decision could stoke flashes of violence if a bye-election is conducted. The Bawku Municipality has made the headlines for the wrong reasons following recent violent clashes which have claimed lives. The judge on Wednesday declared Adamu Dramani unfit to stand for elections following a suit by a herdsman, Sumaila Bilbio that the MP held dual citizenship. By the country’s laws enshrined in the 1992 constitution, a person can only become a minister or a Member of Parliament, if he is a Ghanaian and does not owe allegiance to any country. One of the residents who spoke to Joy News said “it was a shocker because once people have given him the mandate and is in parliament for only six months, he should have been left to continue.” “Coming against the background that Bawku is a violent town we were thinking people should have allowed sleeping dogs to lie. If we are going wake it up again, it is not going to help us. “If there is going bye election in Bawku, it is not going to be well with the town at all,” he said. Another who described the ruling as “worrying” said the people are not happy. But the accuser, Sumaila Bilbio is not impressed by the lamentations by some of the residents. He said the Bawku violence has persisted since 1984 and is not convinced his victory against the MP will lead to relapse. He dismissed claims that he was ‘pushed’ by Mahama Ayariga, now spokesperson to President John Mills to pursue this court case against Bawku.
