The Ministry of Interior has imposed a curfew on the Bawku Municipality and its environs effective 2pm today Monday, November 2 to 6am tomorrow, Tuesday, November 03, 2009.
A statement signed by the information Minister, Mrs Zita Okaikoi, said the development "is in view of the renewed violence that erupted in Bawku last night through to this morning."
The imposition of the curfew was in consultation with and on the recommendation of the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
"The curfew is meant to protect life and property in the area and also enable the security agencies deploy more troops on the ground to enhance security operations in the Bawku township."
The statement noted that the curfew period would be subject to review based on the situation in the area when it expires on Tuesday.
News reports say on Sunday, a group of armed men shot into a group of mourners and the shooting is continuing while the streets are deserted.
