Packaged water producers say they will soon begin bagging purified water in bio-degradable sachets.
Disposal of the plastic waste in which the water is presently bagged has been a major source of concern as consumers simply litter indiscriminately after use.
The pollution caused by the material polythene is one of the reasons why government wants to impose a 20-percent ad valorem tax on the product to cater for the filth under the “polluter pays principle”.
The producers say they are currently in consultation with the Ghana Standards Board (GSB) on new packaging material which will decompose easily.
The president of the National Association of Sachet Water Producers claims the new move will be a success.
“I heard that it’s a success story and I believe that very soon there will be another law mandating all of us to actually use biodegradable plastics in packaging our water,” he said.
