Ghana will set camp in the Brazilian city of Marceio during the Brazil 2014 World Cup. The city is regarded as the most violent city in Brazil.
Information gathered by GNA Sports indicates that, the Ghanaian contingent that attended the World Cup draw in Brazil last week firmed up the venue after touring other facilities.
Marceio, the capital and the largest city of the coastal state of Alagoas, Maceió has the unfortunate distinction of being Brazil most dangerous city and the world's third with a homicide rate of 135 homicides per 100,000 people.
Once known for its idyllic beaches and colonial architecture, the city’s homicide rate has climbed by 185% in just 10 years.
Much, if not most, of the violence is drugs related with numerous addicts murdered every week due to unpaid debts. One man, a resident of one of the city’s sprawling favelas, said that 5 of his sons had been murdered in recent years.
With over 1,500 murders in 2011, Maceió is just one of the 14 Brazilian cities in the top 50 most violent cities in the world.
The Black Stars are billed to arrive in Marceio five clear days before the World Cup begins on June 12.
The information indicates that Ghana opted for Marceio as a result of its proximity to the various venus, fine weather plus a few conditions the delegation found favourable to the Black Stars' cause.
A source at the GFA told GNA Sports "The fine weather conditions which is similar to Ghana and all the other cities the team will play influenced this decision as well.
"It is expected that the conditions will be around 29 degrees Celsius at that time and also proximity and nearness to the venues."
The city is know for its beautiful beaches. It is also houses some slum areas.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars could set a pre-tournament base in either Europe or America.
Ghana are housed in Group G alongside Germany, Portugal and USA.
The Black Stars will open their campaign against the USA in Natal before meeting Germany and Portugal in Fortaleza and Brasilia respectively.
